Amethyst — the purple variety of quartz — has been used in fine jewelry across nearly every culture that produced gem-set ornament. The rectangular cut (also called emerald or step cut) emphasizes the stone's transparency and color depth more clearly than rounded cuts do.

This pendant uses a natural amethyst in rectangular cut, approximately 6 × 4 mm, set in 18K yellow gold. The geometric stone shape gives the pendant a more architectural reading than teardrop or oval cuts produce.
